A White Christmas

Sunday, December 21st, 2008

Somebody might logically ask, can there be a White Christmas in Southern California? Well, it’s certainly highly unusual — unless you live up in the high mountains of Southern California like I do. We’ve got about a foot of snow on the ground from that storm that blew through here early this week.
I have a love/hate relationship with snow. On one hand, I love the beauty of it and how incredibly quiet it is after a snow. Snow apparently is a great sound insulator. But man how I hate to have to shovel out my car after a snow. And of course, you’re working in the freezing cold.
If the snow is falling at or just below freezing (32 degrees fehrenheit) it is what we call “wet snow”, which means it is not the fluffy “powder” that the skiers love, it’s heavy and thick and weighs a lot more than the powder. In short, it’s a bitch to shovel. I hate it. I think I’m allergic to heavy labor — many of us are — and shoveling that stuff gets me in a foul mood.
Then again, I was in LA doing some gigging last week and the traffic was so thick that it took me over an hour to go a lousy 10 miles. No labor involved there, just plenty of patience was needed.
Like they say: “You gotta love what you have.” That’s the truth. So, I’ll take my wet snow and be OK with it.
